Annie Wegner LeFort is a chef, writer and mother who blogs at leforthomestead.blogspot.com, She will share her reasons, ideas, trials and tribulations, and future goals for urban homesteading in the Milwaukee area accompanied by samples of her preserves and other domestic artistry. 10:15 a.m. - Noon -- Earth-Friendly Food Shopping with Young Kim and Martha Davis Kipcak

When you want to eat in a way that is healthy not only for you and your family but also for our planet, what are the best places to buy meats, vegetables, eggs, milk, etc.? Young Kim, Director of the Fondy Food Center and Martha Davis Kipcak, Food Program Manager for the Center for Resilient Cities share their tips, expertise and stories. Room: UL-3 (upper level)

10:15 a.m. - Noon -- How to Start a Community Garden with Gretchen Meade

The Victory Garden Initiative promotes the use of our own backyards (and front yards and rooftops and patios) for the production of food. Gretchen is the Director of Victory Garden, and she will help us learn how start our own gardens -- everything from choosing the place to buying seeds and plants to planning ahead for next Spring. 10:15 a.m. - Noon -- Children's Workshop: Kids Yoga with Melissa Paap-Young

Like adults, children live in a hurry-up world these days. Yoga is a wonderful way for kids to learn ways to relax, develop body awareness and healthy self-esteem -- and have fun in the process. Melissa Paap-Young is an experienced teacher of yoga for young people, here to introduce kids to a practice that can help them navigate life's challenges with a little more ease. Room: Gathering Area (lower level) or outdoors

1:15 - 3:00 p.m. -- The Current Commercial Model of Food Production: The Trade-offs and the Implications for Sustainability with David Andrews

David Andrews is Director of the Michael Fields Agricultural Institute, which is devoted to developing an agriculture that can sustain the land and its resources. Michael Fields strives to revitalize farming through research, education, technical assistance and public policy. David will help us understand today's farming, and consider why sustainable agriculture is so important to each of us. Room: Sanctuary (main level)

1:15 - 3:00 p.m. -- Soulful Eating for Everyone with the Rev. Suzelle Lynch

How can we turn our meals into expressions of gratitude, earth-blessing, and deeper connections with ourselves, our friends and our families? Suzelle is minister of UU Church West and has mindful and soulful eating practices to share with us. Room: UL-3 (upper level)

1:15 - 3:00 p.m. -- Children's Workshop: The Worm Mon Show

Godsil James is the Sweetwater Foundation's Worm Mon, and he's here to share the hands-on joy of how worms turn garbage into gold! Join in the fun and be part of this lively and enlightening show. Room: Gathering Area (lower level) or outdoors

3:15 - 4:30 p.m. Keynote Presentation with Anna Lappé, "The Climate Crisis at the End of Your Fork and What You Can Do About It"

While we may not think “global warming” when we sit down to dinner, our tangled web of global food -- from Pop-Tarts packaged in Tennessee and eaten in Texas to pork chops raised in Poland, with feed from Brazil, then shipped to South Korea -- is connected to as much as one third of total greenhouse-gas emissions. Lappé will bring us stories, insights and ways we can take action to address the climate crisis through the food we eat. With seven principles for a climate-friendly diet and success stories from sustainable food advocates around the globe, she offers a vision of a food system that can be part of healing the planet and a hopeful message during troubling times.
