GLBT Concerns

Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Concerns

As a UUA-recognized Welcoming Congregation, UUCW has the following qualities:

  • We include and address the needs of bisexual, gay, lesbian, and transgender persons at every level of congregational life—in worship, in programs, in social occasions, and in rites of passage—welcoming not only their presence, but the gifts and particularities of their lives as well.
  • We assume the presence of bisexual, gay, lesbian, and transgender people and celebrates this diversity by having inclusive language and content in worship.
  • We fully incorporate the experiences of bisexual, gay, lesbian, and transgender persons throughout all programs, including religious education.
  • We have an affirmation and nondiscrimination clause in our by-laws and other official documents affecting all dimensions of congregational life, including membership, hiring practices, and the calling of religious professionals.
  • We engage in outreach into the bisexual, gay, lesbian, and transgender community in its advertising and by actively supporting bisexual, gay, lesbian, and transgender affirmative groups.
  • We offer congregational and ministerial support for union and memorial services for bisexual, gay, lesbian, and transgender persons, and for celebrations of bisexual, gay, lesbian, and transgender family definitions.
  • We celebrate the lives of all people and welcomes same-sex couples, recognizing their committed relationships, and equally affirms displays of caring and affections without regard to sexual orientation.
  • We seek to nurture ongoing dialogue between bisexual, gay, lesbian, transgender, and heterosexual persons and to create deeper trust and sharing.
  • We affirm and celebrate bisexual, gay, lesbian, and transgender  issues and history during the church year.
  • We attend to legislative developments and work to promote justice, freedom, and equality in the larger society.
  • We speak out when the rights of bisexual, gay, lesbian, and transgender people are at stake.

Interweave West is a group within UUCW that works actively to end oppression based on sexual orientation and gender identity, recognizing that we will not be free until all oppression is a thing of the past. We value and affirm the lives and experience of GLBTQ people of faith of all ages, races, ethnicities, income levels, and abilities, and we help UUCW live out its status as a Unitarian Universalist Association-recognized Welcoming Congregation.

By working in collaboration with other organizations of similar vision, Interweave West strives to connect and nurture GLBTQ individuals, communities, groups, and their allies.  For more information, contact Mark Walker.
