The Social Action Council is composed of church members who oversee our Social Action Endowment, help start new social justice projects, and support our many active project teams:

• Global Justice and Peace Task Force
• Split the Plate (outreach giving to meet local needs)
• Habitat for Humanity
• Nicaragua Brigades
• Guest House Meal Program
• Food Pantry
• Economic Justice Team
• Common Ground (community-based organizing)
• Earth Ministry/Sustainability
• Interweave/Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender issues

The council meets quarterly.

Annual Social Justice Themes

Unitarian Universalist Church West embarked on a new approach to its practice of social justice in 2008: focusing on a year-long social action theme. Our educational curriculum, movie nights, Sunday services, service projects and action projects concentrate on our theme as much as possible. Our themes so far:

• 2008: No More Turning Away which culminated in a Cardboard City wherein members and their families chose to sleep in cardboard boxes of their own makings
• 2009: Creating Peace which resulted in adoption of a Peace Pledge and led to our designation as a Peace Advocate Congregation. Read the pledge and learn more about peace and justice at UUCW.
• 2010: Food and Environmental Justice.
• 2011-2012: Common Ground/Community-Based Organizing

Social Action Endowment Fund

The Social Action Council also oversees the Social Action Endowment Fund.  The committee awards grants from the earnings of this fund, currently valued at approximately $58,000. Contact any member of the Social Action Council to propose a grant.
