UUCW is helping to call attention to an urgent opportunity to speak from your faith, your values, or for your community and defend transgender, nonbinary, two-spirit, and intersex people.
We do so at the invitation of UUSC, the UUA, and Trans Religious professional UUs Together (TRUUsT).
The Situation:
We have days left to submit a public comments opposing a Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) proposed rule that would strip safety protections from federally funded shelters for people simply being who they are.
HUD has proposed a rule that would remove protections for sexual orientation and gender identity, allow shelter providers to demand “evidence” of a person’s sex, and override state, local, and Tribal protections that currently keep trans and intersex people safe in homeless shelters, domestic violence shelters, and disaster shelters.
As Unitarian Universalists and people of progressive moral conscience, we uphold a covenant that asks us to affirm and protect our transgender and intersex members and kindred, in faith and in practice. The proposed HUD rule directly betrays our shared covenantal values.
