An Earth Ministry message from Karen Zimmerman
This article is the first in a series about environmental organizations that members of Earth Ministry have some type of affiliation with. EM members frequently utilize information from these organizations for educational purposes and to guide us in taking action. These organizations explicitly focus on an equity, diversity, or environmental justice lens in their work. Many of these organizations have local or state chapters whose work directly impacts Wisconsin. This series of articles will highlight the Sierra Club, Wisconsin Conservation Voters, Plastic Free MKE, and Citizen’s Climate Lobby. If you are a member of another environmental organization, just let me know and we will highlight it.
As we near the holiday gift-giving season, EM urges members to look at alternative gift-giving. This form of giving is often used as an alternative to consumerism and to mitigate the impact of gift-giving on the environment. One form of alternative gift giving is where the giver makes a donation to a charitable organization on the gift recipient’s behalf instead of giving them an item. Perhaps you will donate money to the above-named organizations or take some action as a gift to someone on your list!

Sierra Club is the most historic grassroots environmental organization in the country. For more than 130 years, they have gathered millions of activists and volunteers to fight for the places, people, and planet we all love. Sierra Club has evolved into an organization that works to advance climate solutions and ensure everyone has access to clean air, clean water, and a healthy environment. Sierra Club currently focuses on three areas:
- Climate and Energy- our voices can influence leaders and transform how industries are powered.
- Lands, Air, Water, and Wildlife – Sierra Club has worked to protect the earth’s vital resources, natural beauty, wild creatures, and scenic landscapes.
- People and Justice: The more vulnerable are the first to feel the impacts of the environmental crisis. Sierra Club focuses on a healthy world for all. They also offer programs to connect youth with nature.
Taking action is as easy as writing a letter to legislators. Sierra Club’s current campaigns focus on the Farm Bill, Divesting, Freedom to Vote Act, and Environmental Justice for All Act. Go to the Sierra Club and click on the Take Action buttons.
