Join us for an EarthSpirit Imbolc Make and Take after service on February 1 in the Community Room. Create your own Brigid’s Cross with provided supplies and guidance. This hands-on activity is welcoming for all ages.
Imbolc is an ancient Celtic holiday that marks the beginning of spring. Signs of new life are all around us: emerging shoots pushing through frozen ground, buds on trees swelling with rising sap, and the birth of little lambs. The word Imbolc means “in the belly” in Old Irish, referring to the pregnancy of the ewes. The earth is pregnant with potential now—on the cusp of giving birth to the potency of spring—and offers the promise of untapped possibility and great hope.
The Celtic solar goddess Brigid blessed the land with fertility and new growth. The St. Brigid’s Cross is a traditional Irish Imbolc craft.
Brigid’s crosses are made from freshly harvested rushes, straw, or wheat. Traditionally hung over doorways, they were created as protective amulets to invoke Brigid’s healing and protective blessings.
