Years ago, it was common for white Unitarian Universalists to ask, “Why isn’t our church more DIVERSE?” meaning racially diverse, of course. The answer I often gave was, “If those ‘diverse’ people are not in your life beyond church, they won’t be in your life within the church, either.” Today, my answer has shifted a lot, but so have all our lives in the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd, and our greater awareness of the prevalence of white supremacy culture. Our October Soul Matters Theme is “Cultivating Relationships,” so let’s go!
