DUUversity is the popular UUCW activity that combines a meaningful theater production, a nice restaurant meal with friends, and stimulating conversation about themes in the play and how they relate to UU values.
Mark your calendars! Your DUUversity Theater planning team (Kathy Lake, Gladie and Jerry Strom, Anne Gurnack, Mary Buchel, and Kathy Herrewig) has chosen Trayf as our first play for the 2026–27 season. The play runs from September 18 to October 4 at Next Act Theatre, 255 S. Water St.
About the Play
Two 19-year-old Hasidic best friends, Zalmy and Shmuel, drive a Chabad “Mitzvah Tank” doing outreach in 1990s New York, handing out Sabbath candles and trying to inspire assimilated Jews. By night, Zalmy sneaks out to explore the secular world, which holds a powerful attraction for him. Their world shifts when they meet a grieving secular music producer and his lapsed-secular girlfriend, Leah. Diverse viewpoints collide.
Ticketing Details
As usual, participants purchase theater tickets on their own and may attend any production during the play’s run.
- Discounts: Seniors (65 and older), educators, active service members, and military veterans get $5 off for any performance.
- Pay What You Can: On Monday, September 28, the 7:30 pm performance is “pay what you can,” with those tickets going on sale at the Ticket Office at 6:30 pm.

Group Dinner & Conversation (October 4)
No matter which performance date you choose to attend, everyone is invited to join the DUUversity Theater Group for dinner and conversation on Sunday, October 4!
Our dinner reservation begins at 4:00 pm at Saz’s State House (5539 W. State St.). Saz’s has a dedicated parking lot with plenty of space and an accessible ramp from the lot to the entrance.
