Trust is a fundamental human need, and we learn trust and practice it within relationships. As Jewish philosopher/scholar Martin Buber noted, “The human being is the promise-making, promise-keeping, promise-breaking, promise-renewing creature.” We learn trust and the practice of promises within committed partnerships, loyal friendships, and yes, in our covenantal relationship with the members of our congregation, and with the church itself.
