The protests sparked by the police-violence death of George Floyd in Minneapolis require us to listen and learn from people like the Rev. Karen Hutt of First Universalist, Minneapolis. In this powerful and personal sermon given 5/31 in Minneapolis, Rev. Hutt says, “Eruptions of anti-blackness can happen at any time, any place… The American machine of white supremacy is so well-oiled not to see or to hear or to feel. It is a cold and calculating gadget with one, singular objective: to kill me in the most comprehensive and thorough manner. Slowly, through policy and infrastructure, or suddenly, through deprivation of oxygen. Time’s up! (We need) actions for something better.”
