So, you decided to grow a vineyard on the side of a volcano. It erupts and kills you. Is this evil? Is it the doing of some Divine power or evil genie, or is it just a regrettable consequence of your stupidity? Maybe the devil made you do it.
What exactly is evil? Are natural events really evil? Can people be fundamentally evil? For Christians, the existence of evil is problematic in a universe created and sustained by an all-loving God. Is all the consequent suffering and death to be blamed on God?
What if evil really doesn’t exist? What if our conception of God is wrong and we are placing blame where none exists? Why is it that we humans stand indignantly in the face of an often chaotic universe and expect it to treat us “fairly” when the rest of the universe doesn’t get the same treatment? There are many deep questions and few, if any, answers. So, join us and help us figure all this out in an hour together!
All UUCW members are welcome to join us for this presentation/discussion in Topics in Liberal Christian Thought. The next meeting will be Thursday, January 18, 2024, at 10:30 AM in UL5.
If you will be attending, please contact Jim Maletta to RSVP so enough materials are available for everyone.
