As sacred literature, The Qur’an is unique in many ways. It was principally created by one man, developed over a short time frame compared to other sacred texts, and relatively young as sacred texts go. The Qur’an and Islam came into being in a phenomenal mixing bowl of religions in the Arabian Peninsula including tribal idol worship, Judaism, various persuasions of Christianity, and Zoroastrianism. This sacred text shows an ongoing dialog with all these religions. It is an evangelical mixture of persuasion, cajoling, and threats aimed at converting people of various religious orientations to join Islam. It is syncretic in its approach as it pulls from multiple religious traditions to meld it into a new faith.
