Working for justice, peace and equality is important to us
Our numerous social action teams are at work on the critical issues of the day, and social justice and respect for the earth are woven into worship and religious education classes. We collaborate with local activists, organizations, and interfaith coalitions to make a difference in the wider community. We also challenge our own learned biases, for we aim to create a welcoming community that includes people of all ages, abilities, races, ethnicities, classes, faiths, sexual orientations, and gender identities and expressions.
Focus Issues
Racial Justice
We work to understand and end racism within ourselves and in the systems of our society and culture. We work for racial justice via our commitment to support the Black Lives Matter movement, including working with activists, community organizations, the Unitarian Universalist Association, and other faith communities to help create a more just and loving society. Environmental Sustainability
UUCW is committed to caring for the Earth through strategies like simple living, and “reduce, reuse, recycle, repair.” Inspired by the seventh UU principle of “respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part,” UUCW promotes “green practices,” is active in environmental advocacy and strives to help our members build a connection between spiritual practice and ecological consciousness. UUCW is dedicated to maintaining a faith community where lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning people are fully welcome and celebrated. Our efforts include offering progressive sexuality education, providing gender-neutral bathrooms, using inclusive language, celebrating marriages and other life milestones and engaging in LGBTQ justice ministry in the wider community. We work for justice, equity, and compassion in personal relationships and for systemic change in our society. Some of our ministry areas have been food pantry collections, community organizing, serving meals at a local homeless shelter, building houses in Nicaragua, and raising funds for other service-based nonprofit organizations. UUCW is a Peace Advocacy Congregation, an honor given to us after many years of campaigning for peace on every level, including personally and globally.
