UU Church West’s “Split the Plate” program is one of outreach and generosity. Each month we give half of all undesignated offerings to a non-profit organization, to help us live out our Unitarian Universalist values and serve our community.

Our Split the Plate partner for May is the Milwaukee Jewish Free Loan Association (MJFLA).  When you support MJFLA, you are helping hundreds of people in our community each year to remain self-sufficient and resolve their own financial challenges without having to give up their dignity. An interest-free loan at just the right time can provide a moment of kindness that sets someone on a better path. MJFLA is the only non-sectarian, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in Wisconsin offering interest-free loans.

Anna’s Personal Story:
An MJFLA interest-free loan made it possible for Anna to adopt a child.  Anna, a tutor, IB high school essay examiner, and education consultant, had been working her way through the adoption process in Milwaukee for three years. She had completed all of the required steps toward her dream of becoming a mother including personal, crime bureau, and police record checks.

She had finished the adoption education requirements and successfully completed the long home study approval process. Anna had been participating in several adoption support and networking groups and had been saving money and fundraising to afford the high cost of adopting a child. Friends were supportive and made generous monetary gifts as well.

Then, all of a sudden, her dream of becoming a mother became a reality. In September, baby Michael was born in Milwaukee and placed with her! She was simultaneously overjoyed and faced with a deadline to come up with the funds to pay the remainder of her adoption fees by the court date or risk losing her baby boy.

A loan from MJFLA made it possible for Anna and Michael to become a family. Thanks to community members like you, people with financial needs like Anna are being offered a cost-free financial alternative.
