Each Sunday, UUCW invites attendees to split their offerings between the church and a community nonprofit that is making a purposeful difference. The August Split the Plate partner is MICAH.

MICAH is a multi-racial, multi-cultural, interfaith organization, founded in 1988.  MICAH brings faith communities and like-minded organizations and individuals together to work for justice and equity. UUCW is a member of MICAH, which is part of WISDOM, a statewide network of faith-based organizations, and WISDOM is a part of the national Gamaliel Network. All branches receive support and organizing training from WISDOM and Gamaliel. Mary Wierman is our representative to MICAH.

MICAH is working on the following issues:

Some of MICAH’s victories include:

  • Over $700 million in loans to first-time, inner-city home owners
  • MORE ordinance requiring at least 25% of work hours be done on publicly funded construction projects by workers from high-poverty zip codes.
  • $1.3 million for new bus routes connecting inner city residents to suburban jobs
  • Millions of dollars in County funding for drug treatment of uninsured addicts
  • With WISDOM won millions of dollars for Treatment Alternatives and Diversion as alternatives to incarceration
  • $4 million in state funding for school nurses in low-income Milwaukee schools
  • Hundreds of leaders empowered by Gamaliel and WISDOM trainings
