Split the Plate is one of UUCW’s programs of outreach and generosity. Each month we give half of all undesignated offering monies to a non-profit organization as a way to help us live our Unitarian Universalist Values and serve our community.

PEARLS for Teen Girls is improving quality of life and strengthening our community one girl at a time by empowering young women with self-development tools, guidance and support to strive for better, brighter futures by living out the PEARLS values: Personal Responsibility, Empathy, Awareness, Respect, Leadership and Support.

Turning Virtual Meetings into Opportunities

During these pandemic times, PEARLS has expanded its virtual programming and increased its ability to reach and serve new girls. With a diversified staff and volunteers, the girls, who are primarily African American, gather in small groups convenient to where they live. Each group is led by a program leader who encourages the development of leadership and the development of each girl’s personal gifts.

Asking the Right Questions Today

What do you want to do after high school? How do you see your way forward? A partnership manager and a college and career readiness coordinator act as pathfinders for the girls.

Many of the program leaders have degrees in social work or education. As well as a team leader each group has a senior girl who becomes an associate. As an ongoing example of what the girls can aspire to these associates become role models as they continue their education beyond high school.

Finding the Path to Tomorrow

Shakia, now a law school student at Marquette, is one of the PEARLS alums who will become an advisor when she finishes her law degree.
