The Pilot Club of Milwaukee is a community service organization whose focus is helping persons affected by brain-related disorders through volunteerism, fundraising, and education. One of the Pilot Club’s longstanding annual projects is to make no-sew fleece blankets for children who are being monitored over a period of days or weeks at the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) of Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin.

Pilots and PieceMakers
In 2019, the Pilot Club invited other area groups to join them in their project. Pilot Club and UUCW member Kathy Herrewig immediately thought of the PieceMakers Quilt Group. The two groups delivered their combined efforts to Children’s and then toured the EMU facilities. Members of the two groups had a grand time and ended up having coffee and snacks at the cafeteria.

This year, PieceMaker members who worked on fleece quilts this year include Jan Sandretti, Judi Traband, Jane Browne, Cyndi Jackson, Susan Endes, and Carolyn Lawrence. The group started working on them in September 2020 and people delivered them to Carolyn Lawrence’s house in early November. Due to COVID, quilt makers could only drop the blankets off at the Corporate Center where they will be in quarantine for two weeks before being given to the children in the EMU. PieceMakers created 14 blankets while the Pilots made 70.

PieceMakers Invite You to Create a No-Sew Quilt
Carolyn would love to see UUCW members and families create a fleece quilt as a winter project in their own homes. They could make a quilt at any time, as they would be included in the November 2021 delivery. Watch this instructional video on how to make a no-sew fleece blanket.

PieceMakers is always looking for new faces to join their meetings. They meet virtually every two weeks and generally have five or six members at the meetings. They go over any general business or announcements and everyone gets a chance to talk about what is going on in their lives and show any projects they may have been working on. Piecemaker’s next meeting is on November 28 at 10:00 am. If you have any questions, would like the Zoom link to join a meeting, or need to set up a delivery of a quilt you have made, contact Carolyn Lawrence.
