Split the Plate is one of UUCW’s programs of outreach and generosity.  Each month we give half of all undesignated offering monies to a non-profit organization as a way to help us live our Unitarian Universalist values and serve our community.  For April, our Split the Plate partner is Project RETURN Milwaukee.

Project RETURN began in 1980 at Cross Lutheran Church. Project RETURN helps individuals who have experienced incarceration make a positive, permanent return to the community, family, and friends. Typically Milwaukee County sees about 2,475 formerly incarcerated people return each year. Typically Project RETURN assists about 1,000 people each year.

In the past year, Project RETURN had 247 people participate in Circles of Support. They helped 170 get into training and support with FSET (Food Share Employment and Training). They helped 72 clients obtain full-time employment with an average wage of $14.07 per hour. They helped a total of 646 people in 2021—down a bit due to the pandemic.

Project RETURN provides many needed services:  referrals for job training, job placement, housing referrals, AODA services, transportation assistance, free clothing for work or school, work supplies or tools, parenting resources, and Circles of Support. They work to reduce the barriers impeding people from being successful and walk with them as they re-establish themselves as productive members of the community.

All of this good work is done by a handful of staff on a budget of a little over $600,000 a year.  Your support is greatly needed for this good work.  To support Project RETURN any time this month, Go to the UUCW website’s Donate” tab and select “Split the Plate” from the menu provided or mail your donation to UUCW, 13001 W.
