UU Church West’s “Split the Plate” program is one of outreach and generosity. Each month we give half of all undesignated offerings to a non-profit organization, to help us live out our Unitarian Universalist values and serve our community.

As members of our congregation at UUCW we are blessed to gather in our church. We meet to share a strong and sustaining set of values. We know we are part of a welcoming community. Unitarian Universalists have another mission. Worthy Now Prison Ministry, WNPM, reaches out to people who are not in a place of their choosing. They are incarcerated.

As part of the UU Association’s Church of the Larger Fellowship, WNPM offers a an opportunity to inmates. They can register to learn about a different, positive path, the same path we follow, UU’s empathetic quest toward spiritual, social and personal growth. When an inmate requests a packet and fills out the application they become part of a multifaceted series of contacts that is free to them. The cost per person is $150 annually, covered by donations like Split the Plate.

One outreach effort offered by Worthy Now has touched our congregation.  It is the Pen Pal program, a one-on-one letter writing connection with a UU living in prison whose pen pal may be their only contact with the outside world.  Lynn Broaddus has shared her experiences writing to “Brad the Dad”, who is incarcerated.
