A message from Board of Trustees member Colleen Gresk

As part of our Board of Trustees meeting at the end of September, we took a look back at the 2019 report from the Financial Call to Action Task Force, as well as the UUCW Vision 2020 plan. This was the first step in fulfilling one of our new Board goals: “Develop and begin to implement a long-term financial viability plan for UUCW.”

There is a unique feeling now when we open up a document and see the year “2019.” We think about the way in which we used to make plans, and what we know now. We think about what we took for granted, and the things we were sure of that we aren’t so sure of now. And as we use these reports to make plans for the future, there are also thoughts of what things might be like a year from now or three years from now.

For this 2019 report, the Financial Call to Action Task Force analyzed UUCW’s financial data and also looked at how the information compares to that of other congregations in our region. Looking back on their findings, one of my takeaways is that we were already in a state of change. Our church and our world are always changing, and this will continue to play a role in our planning process.

Part of our preparation for October’s Board meeting will be to review these documents and make notes for discussion. This exercise will give us a chance to add what we’ve learned over the past year and a half, and to launch a more in-depth conversation about our role in the financial stewardship of our church. I feel that one of our strengths as a Board is the willingness to bring up new ideas, and I look forward to hearing everyone’s thoughts as we work towards our goals.
