UU Church West’s “Split the Plate” program is one of outreach and generosity. Each month we give half of all undesignated offerings to a non-profit organization, to help us live our Unitarian Universalist values and serve our community.
Our Split the Plate partner for November is Healing Intergenerational Roots (HIR), suggested by UUCW member Beth Zaretzke.
HIR is a Milwaukee-based non-profit organization located on the Wgema Campus, Forest County Potawatomi Tribal land. They provide free mental health and wellness services to victims of crime and violence within the local indigenous community.
In the past year, HIR served 120 persons who were victims of domestic abuse or human trafficking, or who were grieving for murdered or missing indigenous women.
HIR’s services are often group-based, where the group is intergenerational and involves members of the victim’s community. HIR believes that we heal in relationships, alongside culture, and within community. HIR also believes that services to support healing from trauma should be available at no cost.
