UU Church West’s “Split the Plate” program is one of outreach and generosity. Each month we give half of all undesignated offerings to a local non-profit, to help us live our Unitarian Universalist values, pursue the goal of Social Justice, and serve our community.

Our Split the Plate partner for April is Milwaukee Riverkeeper.  Their mission is to protect, improve, and advocate for water quality, riparian wildlife habitat, and sound land management in the Milwaukee, Menomonee, and Kinnickinnic River Watersheds.  They envision a future in which people from all walks of life can enjoy the healthy waterways of the Milwaukee River Basin.

This month we are focusing on just one of their many programs:  Plastic Free Milwaukee. Their mission: To reduce the harm that unnecessary plastics have on environmental health, public health, and social justice. Their vision: A healthier Milwaukee for everyone, free from the harms of unnecessary plastics.

Every bit of plastic that has ever been created still exists. We depend on plastic and now we’re drowning in it. Our rivers and Great Lakes are feeling the impact of the plastic epidemic, and it is threatening the health of aquatic wildlife and our communities.

Plastic Free Milwaukee offers public webinars and meetings, presenting for other organizations, tabling and leading activities at community events, and educating the public via social media channels and newsletters. Their Plastics Education Toolkit provides a menu of resources that educators are invited to adapt based on their unique student and classroom needs. The H2O Refill Program supports Milwaukee’s movement for social justice by donating reusable water bottles and by providing water refill stations at local marches, rallies, and other events. Their Lake Friendly Program supports and gives recognition to restaurants, bars, and cafes that are removing as much plastic as possible from their daily operations.
