UU Church West’s “Split the Plate” program is one of outreach and generosity. Each month we give half of all undesignated offerings to a non-profit organization, to help us live our Unitarian Universalist values and serve our community.

Our Split the Plate partner for June through mid-July is Groundwork Milwaukee. Groundwork is focused on bringing people into contact with the natural world, in projects that will benefit both the people and the environment.

Groundwork Milwaukee’s Green Team is a service-learning program that engages 14 to 17 year-olds living in Groundwork’s most engaged communities. The program’s dual goals are to prepare youth for a lifetime of environmental leadership and to develop community capacity to improve the physical environment. Green Team members are immersed in Groundwork practical projects and act as Groundwork employees, neighborhood stewards, and mentors to elementary-aged youth. Green Team members are also offered the opportunity to participate in service-learning experiences at National Parks in collaboration with Groundwork USA. On these trips, youth are trained to build trails and restore historical park buildings using traditional construction methods.
