UU Church West’s “Split the Plate” program is one of outreach and generosity. Each month we give half of all undesignated offerings to a non-profit organization, to help us live our Unitarian Universalist values and serve our community. Our Split the Plate partner for November is SOPHIA of Waukesha, Inc.
SOPHIA is the Waukesha member of the Wisconsin interfaith organization known as WISDOM. WISDOM has 14 county members, including MICAH in Milwaukee County and SOPHIA in Waukesha County, all of which work to promote justice and equity in their local communities and serve the most vulnerable. SOPHIA is composed of 14 religious congregations in Waukesha County, including UUCW, and individual members. UU Church West has been a member of Sophia for the past 3 years.
SOPHIA’s success is dependent on building our capacity to organize our members in order to have the power to make the systemic changes needed for all people in our communities to thrive. SOPHIA needs your help to build that capacity by continuing to work with us on combating hate speech, racial inequalities, homelessness and mass incarceration, and promoting mass transportation solutions, immigration reform, voter engagement and improved access to health care. As one example, SOPHIA rallied its members to help defeat an “anti-Critical Race Theory” resolution being considered by the Waukesha County Board of Supervisors last month.
Besides monetary donations, you can help by joining the UUCW “Core Team” and getting involved in one or more of the many SOPHIA task forces. To learn more, visit SOPHIA.org or contact Eric Hoaglund or Suzanne Schalig, the UUCW representatives serving on the SOHIA Board of Directors.
