In the PBS comedy series Doc Martin, the title character is a surgeon who ironically develops a fear of blood yet still finds important ways to serve patients.
While Doc’s phobia makes for good comedy, it highlights that not everyone at UUCW has the inclination or skills to administer first aid. If that describes you, there are still many ways to help in a medical emergency. Visit the Safety and Security Committee table in the Community Room on September 27 to learn more.
Even without first aid training, in a medical emergency, you can:
- Call 911 and provide clear information about the situation and location.
- Call out to see if anyone present has first aid, CPR, or medical training.
- Get supplies from the emergency equipment wall in the foyer or from the first aid kits located in the upper level, lower level, or kitchen.
- Read and follow the procedures in the emergency flipbooks located on the wall in the foyer and in the grab bags stored on the shelves in the coat room and behind the monitor in the Sanctuary.
- Keep the patient calm, comfortable, and reassured while waiting for emergency personnel to arrive.
- Help create space around the patient and direct emergency responders to the scene when they arrive.
Remember, in an emergency, staying calm and taking simple, practical steps can make a meaningful difference until trained medical help arrives.
